Oriental Influences in Western Watercolors

The Cascades

This semi-abstract painting of a waterfall and cascades was painted on chinese cotton paper, using the traditional pigments, which include some opaque colours. However, the format and the composition show the influence of western watercolour landscapes.
This painting is similar to the above, with more dominant cerulean green hightlights. The depiction of the gnarled pine clinging to the rocks is also a favorite theme in chinese paintings.

Bloodroot

This painting of an unusual plant is reminiscent of the lotus which is so well loved by the chinese painters and poets. It is painted on clay coated chinese paper, which allows the opaque pigments to be highlighted.

Azaleas

A Western styled composition painted on chinese paper.

Cyclamens -

The thinness of chinese paper allows background colours to be added to the reverse side of the sheet after the subject has been painted and dried.
